Year One
The Year One teacher is Miss Cusack and she is supported by Ms Davies. We aim to make the children's transition from Reception to Year 1 a smooth one and balance their curriculum with a mixture of play-based and more formal forms of learning.
Children in Year 1 continue to be taught to read and write using systematic synthetic phonics (Phase 5 from FFT Success for All Phonics programme). They are taught to read by breaking down words into separate sounds and blending them together. The children take home reading books which have been chosen to reinforce their learning of phonics in class.
Every morning we teach the National Curriculum expectations for Maths using a maths mastery approach. We teach children to count and apply different mental strategies for addition and subtraction, recognise shape and pattern and solve picture and word problems. The children quickly learn to notice patterns and develop their mathematical thinking and problem solving skills.
Our Year 1 children experience a wide range of learning opportunities across their curriculum. Please see below for a snapshot of their learning across the academic year.
